Meeting this Wednesday 6/20! Lots of comps and DIY Housing Service

We've got a great meeting this Wednesday, featuring several competitions. We'll have the images from our second California Shootout on the Sundiver from last weekend. We'll also have our first ever digital slideshow competition, and the video competition is "3 minutes edited".

To keep the meeting to a reasonable length, we'll have a short workshop but no speaker. Workshop will be by Roger Carlson on "Do It Yourself Housing Maintenance". See you there!

Please name your entries, as usual:

Mexican legislation to protect sharks opens closed areas to longliners

Mexican regulation NOM-029-PESCA-2006 Took Effect May 16. This new regulation was promoted as a way to protect Shark and Ray populations from overfishing. Instead, it permits thousands of longline fishing boats inside parts of the Sea of Cortez that are now supposed to be protected from commercial take.

Several sections of the regulation will act as "Trojan Horses" to reverse the intended effects of this new regulation. These Trojan horses include a reduction in protected zones, permission to keep any bycatch caught while fishing for sharks, and no reduction in current permits.

Basically, longline boats can now fish for sharks in areas formerly closed to them, and keep any fish caught while fishing for sharks.

More information and an electronic sample letter opposing the regulation are available at:
